With its roots resembling parsnips and emitting a smell akin to parsley, hemlock water dropwort contains a powerful toxin called oenanthotoxin. Even a tiny amount of this deadly substance can lead to severe consequences, such as convulsions and, alarmingly, death by suffocation due to its impact on the nervous system.
In light of this discovery, the council has strongly advised the community against touching the plant and recommended pet owners keep their animals away from affected areas. At that time, the Millom Coastguard Rescue Team also urged vigilance, particularly among families with children and pets.
