A legendary jockey's return to the spotlight: Joao Moreira's Hong Kong comeback story!
Joao Moreira, a name synonymous with success on the global racing stage, is set to make a highly anticipated return to Happy Valley, Hong Kong, after a three-year hiatus. But here's where it gets controversial: Moreira, a four-time premiership winner in Hong Kong, had initially hoped for a quicker return to the city's packed riding roster.
Moreira's journey back to Hong Kong began with a slight detour. After quitting Hong Kong racing in 2022, he embarked on a global farewell tour, leaving many to wonder if his Hong Kong chapter had closed for good. However, the Longines International Jockeys' Championship (IJC) has provided the perfect platform for his comeback, with Moreira set to ride in the competition for the first time since 2021.
And this is the part most people miss: Moreira's connection to the IJC runs deep. It was here, in 2012, that he first caught the eyes of Hong Kong racing enthusiasts, winning the jockeys' challenge and setting the stage for his successful eight-and-a-half-year stint in the city.
"Can you believe it's been four years? Riding at Happy Valley again will surely bring back a flood of memories," Moreira said, reflecting on his impressive record of over 1,200 Hong Kong winners and four premierships.
Since leaving Hong Kong, Moreira has become a sought-after 'gun for hire,' continuing to make his mark at the highest levels of racing. He believes his rides on Wednesday night, including the Caspar Fownes-trained Super Sixty, could pave the way for another IJC triumph.
"My best days might be behind me, but I'm still having a blast, and the recent results have been fantastic. It would be the icing on the cake to win this competition once more," he added.
The competition at the IJC is fierce, with Moreira acknowledging that the line-up is probably the greatest ever assembled. Despite this, he remains optimistic, especially with a favorite in the opening leg.
Another jockey returning to the IJC spotlight is Christophe Lemaire, a Frenchman based in Japan. Lemaire, who tasted success in the competition in 2009, is aiming for a consistent performance across the four races, believing it could be his ticket to championship glory.
The odds for the IJC favor Moreira at $6.5, while Lemaire is considered an outsider at $18. Other notable jockeys in the market include Zac Purton, Hugh Bowman, Vincent Ho Chak-yiu, William Buick, James McDonald, and Ryan Moore. Reigning champion Mickael Barzalona is also in the mix, with a $10 chance to become the first repeat winner since Purton in 2021.
