Namibia's Rising Star: Owen Damaseb's Stunning Goal for Bucks Buccaneers (2025)

A stunning turn of events in Namibian football saw Owen Damaseb return to his former club, African Stars, not as a friend, but as the architect of their defeat. His decisive goal, a stunning freekick, secured a shock 1-0 victory for Bucks Buccaneers, leaving African Stars reeling.

Damaseb's departure from African Stars after the previous season seemed like a closed chapter, but his move to Bucks Buccaneers has proven to be a masterstroke for both the player and his new team. He has been instrumental in their resurgence this season, a fact that undoubtedly stings his former club.

The absence of a permanent head coach for African Stars, following Ronnie Kanalelo's exit, adds another layer of complexity to their current situation. Under the guidance of caretaker coach Jaanda Ngozu, Bucks Buccaneers has impressively secured victories in their last two matches, climbing to seventh place in the league standings.

The match itself was a tense affair, with both sides evenly matched. But it was Damaseb who stole the show, his expertly taken freekick early in the second half proving to be the difference.

Damaseb, who celebrated his 23rd birthday on November 22nd, was understandably elated after the match. "It's a great feeling getting a goal against my former team and I should say I'm proud of my team and the way we fought. I wouldn't say I feel bad about scoring against Stars, but this is football," he shared.

He also expressed his team's belief in their ability to win. "Throughout the week we really trained hard and you could see we wanted this result. I think we can go very far with a team like this, I think with the fighting spirit that the team showed, we can go far," he added.

This defeat marks only the second loss of the season for African Stars, placing them in joint second position on the log with 14 points.

But here's where it gets interesting... KK Palace remains three points ahead of the pack after a goalless draw against Unam on Saturday. This result also propelled Unam to joint second place alongside Stars and Mighty Gunners, while simultaneously solidifying their position as the only unbeaten team in the league.

Meanwhile, FC Ongos suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 2-1 to Eeshoke Chula Chula, who subsequently climbed to fifth position.

The weekend's other matches delivered their own share of drama: Tigers edged out Rundu Chiefs 1-0, Life Fighters and Blue Waters played to a 2-2 draw, Julinho Athletic triumphed over Young African 2-0, and Mighty Gunners and Eleven Arrows ended in a 0-0 stalemate. Earlier, on Thursday, Okahandja United secured a 2-0 victory against Khomas Nampol.

Sunday's matches continued the trend of unpredictable results: Khomas Nampol defeated Bucks Buccaneers 3-1, Rundu Chiefs beat Young African 2-0, Mighty Gunners and Blue Waters drew 1-1, Ongos beat KK Palace 1-0, Tigers and Julinho Athletic drew 1-1, African Stars rebounded with a 3-0 win against Okahandja United, Chula Chula FC and Unam played to a 0-0 draw, and Life Fighters and Arrows ended in a 1-1 draw.

This season is shaping up to be a rollercoaster! What do you think of Damaseb's performance? Do you think African Stars will recover from this setback? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
