Pokémon Go's Super Mega Raids: A New Social Adventure (2026)

Pokémon Go is set to revolutionize its gameplay with the introduction of Super Mega Raids and a new currency system called Link Charges, aiming to foster a more social gaming experience. This update, coming alongside the mobile game's major event, Pokémon Go Tour: Kalos, promises to bring an exciting new challenge to players. The Super Mega Raids will feature Mega-Evolved Pokémon that become enraged and erect shields, requiring players to work together to take them down. Each trainer can only break one shield, adding a layer of strategy and cooperation. The goal is to encourage players to connect with their fellow trainers at events and community meetups, creating a more vibrant and social gaming environment.

Super Mega Raids will introduce a new tier of Mega Level Pokémon, known as Super Max, and players will have the opportunity to battle Mega Victreebel and Mega Malamar, both recently introduced in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The developers at Niantic aim to enhance the social aspect of the game, addressing the fact that many players don't interact with Megas. By making Megas more prominent and adding new features, they hope to encourage players to engage with each other and the game's community.

Link Charges, inspired by Max Particles, are a new currency designed to promote social play. Players can earn them through various activities, such as community check-ins, gifting friends, opening gifts, and completing weekly challenges. The core idea is to reward social interactions and bring players together, creating a more engaging and connected gaming experience. John Funtanilla, a senior producer on Pokémon Go, emphasizes that Link Charges offer flexibility in how players interact with the game, allowing them to choose their preferred methods of engagement.

Niantic is also implementing behind-the-scenes systems to encourage player convergence. By strategically placing spawns and Super Mega Raids, they aim to bring players together in popular play areas. This approach addresses the issue of too many spawns across nearby gyms, promoting natural and organic meetings between trainers. Players can expect to experience these new systems and the improved Mega Raid mechanics starting this weekend with Pokémon Go Tour events in Tainan and Los Angeles, and globally from February 28th with the Pokémon Go Tour: Kalos – Global event.
