Record-Breaking $3.2 Million Bluefin Tuna Auction in Tokyo! 🍣 (2026)

In an astonishing display of market enthusiasm, a colossal bluefin tuna weighing 243 kilograms (or 535 pounds) achieved an unprecedented sale price of 510 million yen, which is approximately $3.2 million, during the inaugural auction of 2026 at Tokyo's Toyosu fish market.

The bid was won by Kiyomura Corp., led by Kiyoshi Kimura, the owner of the well-known Sushi Zanmai restaurant chain. Kimura, who has a history of winning this annual auction multiple times, surpassed his own previous record—a striking 334 million yen (around $2.1 million) set back in 2019.

Reflecting on the auction, Kimura expressed a hint of surprise at the final price, stating that he had hoped for a lower amount, but "the price shot up before you knew it."

As the auction commenced shortly after dawn, the venue was filled with beautifully shaped tuna, each with their tails removed to allow bidders to inspect important qualities such as color, texture, and fat content as they moved through the rows of fish. This particular bluefin tuna was caught off the coast of Oma in northern Japan, an area renowned for producing some of the finest tuna in the country, with its value calculated at approximately 2.1 million yen ($13,360) per kilogram or $6,060 per pound.

Kimura shared his thoughts on the purchase, saying, "It’s in part for good luck. But when I see a good-looking tuna, I cannot resist ... I haven’t sampled it yet, but it’s got to be delicious."

Every morning, hundreds of tuna are sold at this auction; however, the prices for Oma tuna tend to soar, especially during the festive New Year auction, marking a special occasion in the culinary world.

Interestingly, while the Pacific bluefin tuna has historically been classified as a threatened species due to challenges like climate change and overfishing, recent conservation efforts have begun to show positive results, leading to a recovery in their population.
